HMM-766 was originally activated in 1958 as one of the original twelve Marine Reserve helicopter squadrons. The "Beavers" were located at Minneapolis, MN from activation until 1970, when the squadron moved to Selfridge AFB in Michigan.

Activated 15 April 1958 at Minneapolis, MN, as MARINE HELICOPTER TRANSPORT SQUADRON 766 (HMR-766).

Redesignated 1 April 1962 as MARINE MEDIUM HELICOPTER SQUADRON 766 (HMM-766).

Relocated during 1970 to Selfridge AFB.

Deactivated 1 October 1976.
