H&MS-40 was activated 30 June 1969 at MCAS(H) New River, North Carolina, as part of Marine Helicopter Training Group 40.It provided administrative and logistic support for the squadrons of Marine Helicopter Training Group 40, as well as Intermediate Level maintenance for the Group's aircraft. H&MS-40 was deactivated with the rest of MHTG-40 on 1 May 1972.
During 2009, the MALS-26 detachment serving in Afghanistan was redesignated MALS-40.
Activated 30 June 1969 at New River, North Carolina, as Headquarters and Maintenance Squadron 40, and assigned to Marine Helicopter Training Group 40, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic.
Deactivated 1 May 1972.
Reactivated 2009 as Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 40, Marine Aircraft Group 40.
